Ultrafiltration is an alternative to conventional filtration for water clarification, with a significant improvement in the effectiveness of treatment (reduction of the turbidity to less than 0.2 NTU) which is obtained regardless of the quality of raw water treated and without chemicals addition.
Ultrafiltration often replaces other more conventional treatment techniques and microfiltration as well, as it has the capacity to eliminate not only small particles but also pathogenic germs including microorganisms, viruses, pyrogen and some dissolved organic species.
Ultrafiltration enables the treatment of waters with up to 300 mg/l total suspended solids (TSS) in pressurized filtration mode, and up to 15 g/l in suction mode (membrane bioreactors).

Objectives of the ultrafiltration
Ultrafiltration removes suspended solids : mineral and organic particles, Turbidity, SDI, Colloids.
Ultrafiltration and Microfiltration remove all the micro-organisms (Algae, Cryptospridium, Giardia, Bacteria). In addition, ultrafiltration removes viruses.
Ultrafiltration and Microfiltration are also applied to concentrate suspended solids or micro-organisms in order to minimize the de-hydratation cost and/or to increase biological activity (membrane bioreactors).
